Driving out the dark

Yesterday I heard about the death of Osama bin Laden. Watching the news we saw lots of footage of people celebrating and waving national flags. This doesn't feel right. To celebrate the death of a person, a violent death, seems so wrong. I might feel differently if I had lost someone in the 9/11 or Bali bombings. I then came across this quote from Martin Luther King which expressed it all for me.
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." --Martin Luther King, Jr.

What did you think/ feel when you heard the news?

  1. agreed! great quote too...similar to ghandi's idea that an eye for an eye means the whole world will be blind in no time.
